ABU DHABI: UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan received Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Abu Dhabi on May 5 for talks on bilateral ties and regional developments, as the two countries marked 50 years of diplomatic relations. The meeting focused on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the UAE and Greece, with both sides reviewing cooperation in investment, technology, renewable energy, sustainability, infrastructure and culture, while reaffirming the importance of regular high-level coordination.

The talks placed fresh emphasis on economic links that have become a core pillar of the relationship since the partnership framework was established in 2020. Officials reviewed collaboration in artificial intelligence alongside broader efforts to expand commercial and investment activity between the two countries. The agenda also covered sectors tied to national development priorities in both states, reflecting how the relationship has grown from political coordination into a wider platform for cooperation across economic, technological and institutional fields.

Sheikh Mohamed and Mitsotakis also witnessed the exchange of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in artificial intelligence and technology, adding a new formal step to the bilateral agenda. The memorandum was exchanged by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology and Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The signing highlighted the growing weight of advanced technology in the partnership as both governments seek closer alignment in innovation, digital capacity and economic diversification.

    UAE-Greece Strategic Partnership Expands

The meeting also turned to regional developments, with the two leaders discussing the latest tensions in the Middle East and their implications for regional and international security and stability. Mitsotakis condemned Iran’s attacks on the UAE and expressed Greece’s solidarity, while also backing a diplomatic solution aimed at restoring peace, stability and security in the region. The discussion placed the bilateral meeting within a broader regional context shaped by heightened security concerns and growing pressure on cross-border economic activity.

Freedom of navigation was also part of the discussion, reflecting its importance to international trade, supply chains and economic prosperity. For both countries, that issue carries direct relevance because of the strategic shipping lanes that connect Gulf energy flows and commercial routes with Europe and global markets. By linking political consultations with the practical impact of regional instability on transport and trade, the meeting underscored the economic dimension of the security issues now confronting the wider region.

    Regional Security in Focus

The Abu Dhabi talks continued a pattern of close engagement between the two governments as strategic, economic and security priorities increasingly overlap. In recent years, the UAE and Greece have built a relationship spanning diplomacy, investment, energy, tourism, culture and defense coordination, supported by repeated contacts at leadership level. This week’s meeting showed that the partnership is being updated through direct consultations and targeted agreements, rather than remaining a broad political framework without specific initiatives.

The attendance of senior UAE officials highlighted the significance attached to the visit, while Mitsotakis’ presence in Abu Dhabi signaled Greece’s continued focus on its Gulf ties at a time of regional strain. By combining discussions on economic cooperation, advanced technology and Middle East developments, the meeting reinforced the UAE-Greece partnership as a channel for political dialogue and practical coordination between two countries seeking to deepen relations amid a volatile regional backdrop. – By Content Syndication Services.
